Looking for Fun Organic Summer Fashion? Check out Nordstrom!

Nowadays it’s easier than ever to shop stylish, eco-friendly fashion with big stores like Nordstrom stocking organic and sustainable clothing. Designer Eileen Fisher creates simple, wearable styles with organic linen and cotton that are perfect for the upcoming summer months.

Not only are organic fabrics good for the environment, they also result in garments which are wonderfully soft and breathable, creating the perfect blend of style, comfort, and sustainability.

For those hot summer afternoons in the garden, Eileen Fisher’s Organic Linen Crop Pants will keep you cool with light fabric and a breezy style. For year-round layering, top them off with a simple Organic Cotton Tank. There’s nothing quite so comfortable in a basic layering piece as the incredible softness and breath-ability of sustainable, organic cotton. If you’re looking to build a complete outfit with organic fashion from Nordstrom, finish those two pieces with an Organic Linen Open Front Cardigan. Made from breathable organic linen, this cardigan is a great option for cooler summer nights and the eventual transition into fall weather.

Shopping for organic, eco-friendly clothing doesn’t mean sacrificing all the versatility and simplicity we’ve come to expect from less sustainable brands. Nordstrom features organic fashions for every body type with certain styles designed specifically for petite women. Most pieces by Eileen Fisher are also machine washable and safe to put in the dryer so it’s easy to incorporate sustainable fashion into your existing clothing routine. Fun organic fashion also doesn’t have to break the bank with Groupon offering promo codes and discounts to shop at Nordstrom on a budget.

It used to be that you had to travel to specialty stores to find stylish and sustainably made clothing, but Nordstrom has made it possible to shop online and buy stylish eco-friendly products no matter where you live.

prAna and Stonyfield Hit the Beach for #TheWholeYou

This post is sponsored by Stonyfield and prAna – all opinions expressed are my own.

Can you believe it is already May? Last weekend, we spent Sunday soaking up the sunshine at the beach! It is the one time each week where I feel really relaxed and present. It’s nice to slow down, spend time with my family and embrace my authentic self! #TheWholeYou Seriously, I would spend every single day at the beach if I could.

When we hit the beach, we plan to spend the whole day swimming, snorkeling, paddleboarding, beachcombing and soaking up the sunshine. So, we always pack a lunch and snacks. Last weekend, we packed veggie sandwiches, fresh fruit, sparkling water and Stonyfield organic whole milk yogurt. While not the typical beach snack, I find cold yogurt to be really refreshing on a hot Florida summer day! Plus, yogurt is a great snack for keeping my family fueled all day which was perfect because later that afternoon we completed our family volunteer work, a beach clean up! It really was a perfect Sunday!

I was pretty excited to receive a pair of Tess shorts from prAna just in the time for the weekend! They slipped perfectly over my swimsuit and where super comfy to wear to the beach clean up. Plus, who doesn’t love sustainable, organic shorts!

The Tess shorts are super cute and 97% organic! They have a little bit of stretch, making them super comfy and giving then a great fit. I love the color selection, they really are the perfect short for summer. Want a pair of your own? You can get 15% off your entire purchase with the code WHOLES17MSG – you can also find PrAna on social!

NOTE FROM SWEET GREENS: I am a #StonyfieldBlogger  and  I received compensation and product coupons in exchange for sharing information. All opinions are 100% my own. ________________________________________________________________________

Last weekend, we had plans to visit our local zoo to support the Stonyfield YoKids sponsor AZA SAFE (Saving Animals from Extinction) program. But guess what? It rained all weekend!

As part of a year-long effort, Stonyfield will not only be contributing funds to field work but also to drive kids and their families to see animals and conservation projects first hand at zoos, aquariums, and on the ground where the research is happening.

We have plans to visit on a sunny weekend in the very near future. With today being World Penguin Day, Stonyfield and AZA are hosting a Facebook live for kids and their parents to get a firsthand look at these majestic seabirds, as well as the conservation work being done to save them. Tune in to this Facebook Live broadcast direct from Mystic Aquarium in Mystic, CT today at 12pm on the Stonyfield Facebook page. How fun is that? I know, we will be tuning in!

Stonyfield YoKids is also featuring an on-pack offer to get families out to visit any of the 131 participating AZA accredited member zoos and aquariums in their own communities. Now through the end of September families who buy two specially-marked YoKids yogurt multipacks will receive a FREE kid’s admission to their local AZA-accredited zoo or aquarium when they also buy an adult ticket.

If you are looking for something fun to do with the family this summer, I think you should jump on this great deal!

Blue Orange Games Make Excellent Holiday Gifts + A Giveaway

blue-orange-games-make-excellent-holiday-gifts-a-giveaway

Are you getting excited for the holidays? I know my family is! We all love the extra time we get to spend together, the fun seasonal activities, and delicious foods that come along with the holiday season. Of course, there are some additional stresses at this time of year—party planning, attending events or taking your kids on various outings, finishing end-of-year tasks, preparing to host family, and gift shopping, to name a few.

If you’re anything like me, coming up with gift ideas ahead of time takes away some of the pressure surrounding the holidays and makes everything more enjoyable. With that in mind, I thought I’d share a great gift idea for the kids or other families in your life! You may have seen me talking about Blue Orange Games before, because they’re a great company and their games are always a hit with Eben and Mr. Sweet Greens. With a chance to win a game from them in this blog post, hopefully they’ll become a favorite with your family, too!

Why Blue Orange Games Make Great Gifts
These games get my seal of approval for gift giving for many reasons. The games produced by Blue Orange are heirloom quality, so you can pass them on to younger generations in the family when your own kids outgrow them. These games are also eco-friendly, made from high-quality materials that gets replenished by the Blue Orange Games commitment to plant 2 trees for each one used in creating their products. That kind of commitment to sustainability and keeping the planet green for our kids and grandkids makes you feel good about buying their games as gifts.

Beyond the basic facts of sustainability and good design, these games are my favorite ones to play with my family. They’re fun, they make you think, and they’re a convenient length to squeeze in between homework and dinner, or in between activities on the weekend. Many of the Blue Orange Games are also designed with families in mind, being fun to play with a small but flexible number of people; often 2-4 makes for a great gameplay experience (it’s great too because Eben and I can play together when Mr. Sweet Greens is at work!) Plus, they work on your cognitive skills, memory, creativity, fine motor skills, and more, so you’re getting some real benefits from playing!

I purchase a handful of these games every year to gift to Eben and Mr. Sweet Greens as our family gift. I always pair it with some of our favorite organic snacks and hot cocoa. It gives us something new and fun to play as a family during winter break, and is a really positive way to spend some of the extra time we have together. This year, I am also giving Blue Orange Games as gifts to my sister’s family, I’m hoping that her and her family will love them as much as we do!

Healthy Habits for Green Kids Start at Home

healthy-habits-for-green-kids-start-at-home-3

As parents, the most important lessons we can impress upon our kids are the sorts of healthy habits that will stick with them throughout life, especially once they’re off on their own for the first time. Healthy lifelong habits can include eating well and exercising, but also extend to things like keeping their living space clean and following good hygiene practices. Today I want to talk about the latter, as no parent wants to see their kid end up as a stereotypically smelly, unkempt teenager!

Of course, kids have to be given freedom to explore their identities and express themselves creatively with their clothing and hair choices. I think it’s only natural for kids developing their sense of self to explore those avenues. But good hygiene is simpler than that, and important for everyone. Teaching kids to maintain healthy habits and take good care of their bodies starts at home, and is something the mister and I have tried to approach in a positive way.

healthy-habits-for-green-kids-start-at-home-1

Personal hygiene is also an area fraught with marketing campaigns (some of which rely on shaming tactics or other nasty approaches to selling their products) surrounding the products we supposedly need to use in order to keep clean. Many of these are full of synthetic scents, untested ingredients, or are otherwise not very eco-friendly, being tested on animals or produced in unsustainable ways. So even our choices of hygiene products can be a big influence on our kids, and what they choose to use in the future. One of my favorite brands of natural personal hygiene products is Tom’s of Maine, who never use artificial colors, flavors, fragrances, preservatives, or animal testing.

You’ve probably seen Tom’s at your local drug store or grocery, and they’ve been around since the ‘70s. I would bet that they’re the most recognizable brand of natural body products around today, not just relegated to health stores or other specialty retailers. I think Tom’s of Maine is great because they aim to operate sustainably and care for both the environment and the communities we live in.

I would say that three of the most important hygiene habits to build with your kids are the following:

healthy-habits-for-green-kids-start-at-home-1

Brushing Teeth: Keeping teeth and gums in good shape is important to overall health and maintaining good breath. It can also be a task which kids (especially young ones) are more likely to shirk or do a half-hearted job of. Being a good role model by brushing and flossing with your children can go a long way to building good dental hygiene habits. Tom’s makes a wide range of oral care products including all-natural toothpaste that my family loves using.

Washing Up: Whether we’re talking regular hand washing to prevent the spread of germs, washing your face each day to help with teenage skin concerns, or getting active kids into the shower to rinse off sweat and dirt after they’ve been out playing, washing up is a huge part of personal hygiene.

Using Deodorant: This one can be a little more controversial, as depending on how you were raised, you might not think of deodorizing products as a necessity. However, in modern society they’re a pretty prevalent part of personal hygiene, and even if you choose not to use antiperspirants due to health concerns, a simple, natural deodorant is a good choice. Tom’s is probably best known for their extensive line of natural deodorants, for men, women, and children. If you’re looking for a healthy, natural deodorant, I don’t think these ones can be beat. My whole family uses them, and we’ve been really impressed by the quality and effectiveness.

I’d love to hear your tricks for helping your kids develop healthy hygiene habits, or your experiences trying natural body products. Have you successfully swapped your conventional hygiene products for eco-friendlier options? How do you teach your kids about the importance of taking good care of their bodies? Have you tried any Tom’s of Maine products that I haven’t mentioned? Let me know in the comments!

Bootler is Revolutionizing Healthy Meal Delivery

Bootler is Revolutionizing Healthy Meal Delivery

Back to school is right around the corner! If you are like most parents, you’ve probably felt the pull of delivery pizza or Chinese food on those busy back-to-school nights where you just don’t have time to cook. Wouldn’t it be fantastic to just pick up the phone and have someone bring hot food straight to your door? Of course, if you’re like me, you probably don’t feel so hot the day after eating too much processed, unhealthy food. If only it were that simple to get a healthy, organic, vegetarian (or vegan!) meal delivered, freshly prepared and ready to eat. With the explosion of internet-based food delivery services, it is actually possible to have this option, though it can be frustrating to figure out which service to use in order to get your favorite organic restaurants to deliver, as they’re all associated with different ones. Enter Bootler, the aggregation service that changes everything.

Sweet Greens - Bootler is Revolutionizing Healthy Meal Delivery 2

Bootler is essentially a search engine for delivery food. Basically, they work with multiple different delivery services, allowing users to pick a restaurant and then compare prices, availability and delivery time. This saves you both time and money when trying to get good, healthy delivery options. Although there is still more typical fare available, Bootler lets you find the largest selection of healthy and organic restaurant options. Interestingly enough, you can also order alcohol from them if you feel like having a bottle of wine or a craft beer with your meal. Alcohol comes from a delivery service called ‘Saucey’ which they are partnered with.

Bootler is not the delivery company; they only bring together other delivery companies and then redirect you to the appropriate website when you’ve decided on your order. You may have used a similar service before to book flights. Similar to Kayak.com, you book the flight through Kayak, but you fly with American Airlines, Delta, or whichever other company is offering the best flight deal. This way you can get healthy, organic, and vegan or vegetarian food options delivered at competitive prices and with the shortest wait time.

I know if I were located in Chicago (which is currently the only city they’re available in) I would be using this service to eat healthy, organic take-out food at home instead of just ordering a pizza on Friday night. Luckily once they’re out of beta, they plan on expanding to NYC by the end of the year and more major cities soon after. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye out for their expansion into Florida, that’s for sure!

If you are lucky enough to live in the Chicago area, I’ve got two coupon codes that you can use with Bootler‘s delivery partners:

  • Use “Saucey” to receive $10 off your alcohol order.
  • Use “Bootler” to receive $10 off your food order from Postmates.

Let me know in the comments if you’ve used Bootler (or a similar service in your city) in the past, and what your favorite healthy delivery meal options are. I’d love to know how you found your experience with the service!

Cameron’s Specialty Coffee: BetterBrew Eco Coffee Pod Review

Cameron's-Coffee-1

Love the convenience of single-use coffee pods but not their environmental impact? Me too! Today I am excited to share a more eco-friendly alternative to a traditional “k-cup”, which I think will be of interest to any of you readers who regularly spend time in locations which only offer Keurig-style coffee machines. I, myself have enjoyed using this alternative when traveling, it really is the only option other than going out to a coffee shop and getting an overpriced latte in a disposable cup. No thank you!

Cameron’s Specialty Coffee had the earth in mind when they designed a compostable alternative to the plastic pods which are so regularly used by most brands who offer these single-serve coffee pod options. It was the next logical step in Cameron’s commitment to being one of the greenest coffee roasters in the world. I took three of their BetterBrew Eco Coffee Pod flavors: Kona Blend, Organic French Roast, and Vanilla Hazelnut with me on a recent trip to Montana. I was excited to see a company thinking about how to make these disposable products a little less damaging.

Traditional plastic k-cups are starting to fill up landfills around the world, despite being a relatively recent innovation. They’re one of the fastest growing types of disposable plastic waste products; current levels of production make enough K-Cups in one year to circle the planet over 10 times! Cameron’s Specialty Coffee has introduced these single serve pods that work in your Keurig-type machine and use compostable materials—from the lid made from paper to rings made from corn, beets, and wood rather than plastics. These materials will return to the earth within 90 days, which is an incredible improvement from the decades or centuries it can take some types of plastic pods to break down!

Cameron's-Coffee-2

Instead of plastics which can also leech chemicals into your coffee when hot water is forced through them, the BetterBrew Eco Coffee Pod uses a filter, just like the way a standard percolator coffee is brewed. Beyond coming up with a more eco-friendly single serve pod, Cameron’s also roasts their beans in the most energy efficient ways. They’re dedicated to eliminating as much water waste in production as possible, which is definitely more ecologically responsible than the average coffee company.

One of the things which most interested me in the BetterBrew Eco Coffee Pods was the fact that they’re organic. Cameron’s also invests in sustainable sourcing by buying Organic, Rainforest Alliance, and Shade Grown coffees sourced from farms in some of the most remote areas of the world. Most places that I stay when traveling only have Keurig-type coffee makers, and I like to be able to still have organic coffee when I’m on the go. The fact that these are also compostable really won me over for my travel coffee needs.

What do you think? Would a greener alternative to plastic coffee pods be useful in your life? Would you visit Cameron’s Coffee and make the #BetterTasteLessWaste pledge to reduce plastic waste?  I would love to hear your thoughts!
