Family New Year’s Resolutions + Interview with NBC Today

Rather than make resolutions each year – I tend to focus on setting small goals each month through out the year. I have found that by breaking down my goals into bite size pieces, it makes them easier to reach. Then, once I reach each milestone, I have a mini-celebration and I set another goal – and step by step I am usually hitting all of my long term goals by the end of the year.

This year, I really wanted to focus on goal making with my family. So, when NBC contacted me wanting to interview me about my family resolutions for 2014 (you can read the whole article here) – I was excited to get started writing down those goals. My big goal this year for my family is to get outside every single day. Living in Florida, we sometimes take sunny days for granted and while I don’t necessarily find anything wrong with staying in on a Saturday binge watching our favorite movies – I do think that there is still time in each day to get outside to enjoy the beauty that surrounds us and to get a little exercise. When it comes to resolutions, here is part of what I think:

As our award for getting outside every single day, I sat down with our calendars on New Year’s Eve and started to book monthly camping trips for 2014. I thought it would be a great way to keep us motivated to get outside every single day and since I set our goals to be simple and short, we will be able to celebrate our family hitting those goals each month. Here is what I have booked so far:

+ January 2014: Marco Island, Florida
+ February 2014: Everglades National Park, Florida
+ June 2014: Bahia Honda State Park, Florida (2 week trip)
+ July 204: Bahia Honda State Park, Florida

Do you make new year’s resolutions with your family? Do you have a particular way to motivate your family to keep those goals all year long? I would love to hear – please share in the comments section below.

Happy New Year’s Eve + 3 Eco-Friendly Tips for Your Celebration

Hello, Friends! Have you been enjoying the holidays? I have to admit, it was super nice to take a few days off to spend exclusively with my favorite people!

Do you have any fun plans for New Year’s Eve? Some years we stay in – other years we go out, I think one of my favorite New Year’s Eve was 1st Night in Fort Collins, Colorado. However, this year the mister doesn’t get home from work until 8:30 p.m. – so we are celebrating the New Year at home with a family dinner and game night. I am very much looking forward to it!

Whether you are staying at home for a quiet evening or going out to a festive party, you can make your New Year’s Eve more eco-friendly, here are my 3 tips to get you started:

1. Stay Local
When deciding on how to spend your New Year’s Eve consider plans that don’t require going far. Whether you decide to stay at home, spend the evening with nearby friends and family or ride your bicycle to a local restaurant – staying local is key. It is also nice to be very close to home, if you plan on having a drink or two – plus, I have to admit I am not a fan of being on the road on NYE.

2. Eat Local
Since we are celebrating at home this year, we will be eating very local. We hit our favorite market last night to pick up all of the ingredients for a yummy Japanese inspired meal at home. If you don’t feel like staying home and cooking – grab a bite from a local restaurant in your neighborhood.

3. Drink Local
Since we are dining in this year, we will be enjoying organic wines with our dinner. Check your local grocery and liquor stores for their organic local offerings. If you are going out for the evening, check the wine menu, many local restaurants will carry local and organic wines – you just have to look or ask for them.

I would love to hear your plans, please leave them below!

We are staying home, all day long – I see a couple of mimosas, snuggling with the mister, puppy dog kisses and Eben’s smiling face filling my entire day. I am excited to have an entire day to do nothing but enjoy my tiny family – I hope you have the same to look forward to. Cheers to a beautiful day!

Christmas Camping + Holiday Lights in St. Augustine, Florida

We wanted our holiday vacation to start with a bang so we planned a Christmas camping trip. We picked Eben up early from school on Friday and headed to St. Augustine, Florida. We choose St. Augustine because the town is known for its holiday lights. So fun!

We spent Saturday night wandering the old town checking out all of the holiday lights. Our favorite part was when we veered off the beaten path and came upon all of the amazing older homes decked out in their best holiday decor!

Really, Eben is having a good time – I promise! Ha.

Did you do anything special to kick off the Christmas vacation?
