Have a Lovely Weekend + A Few Green Things

Hello Everyone,

How was your week? Are you looking forward to a 3 day weekend? Yay, for Labor Day! We are settling into the new school year schedule, are you? Are your children enjoying the school year? Are they ready for a break already?

Today, I am having my lovely friend Cameron Mora and her son over for a Tea and Wii afternoon. It is as simple as it sounds – Eben gets to play Wii with a friend and I get to have tea and female conversation with a lovely gal. Perfect, no? The best part, when I came home yesterday, Mr. Sweet Greens said, “I prepared an organic cheese and cracker platter and picked up some organic cookies for your Tea and Wii tomorrow afternoon.” What a great guy!

Yesterday, morning when Eben came back from his morning walk with the dogs – he brought this home.

Tomorrow, as well as most of the weekend is going to be spent at the beach – of course! Last weekend we went to a beach that we had never been to before. The shoreline was covered in these fantastic rock formations – this is where Eben wants to go tomorrow. I will take my camera and get some shots to share with you next week. Other than that, we hope to spend time with family and friends, while soaking up the sun.

While I get my beach bag packed – here are a few green things that I wanted to share with you:

– I am definitley going to hide my craft supplies in plain sight.
– A sheep quilt? Yes, please.
– A sweet and sad animated 27 year romance.
– Oh my! Tube socks for babies.
– Love, love, love these “named” reusable sandwich and snack bags.
– Doesn’t your child want a DIY modern kitchen, that will rival your own!
– Isn’t the above photo beautiful, reminds me a lovely summer night.

I hope you have a lovely Labor Day weekend and enjoy the time with your family and friends. I will see you bright and early Tuesday morning.

xo,
Sweet Greens

Art in Architecture: The Urban Landscape by Guest Greenie – Angie Lilly

I love old buildings and industrial spaces. The architectural elements of these places are always so interesting, detailed, and grand compared to the cookie-cutter styles of today’s buildings. Oh, I know there are SOME newer spaces that mimic the old or are trying something new, but they aren’t the norm. That’s why I love to take walks through my town’s historic downtown area, as well as the historic areas all around Columbus, Ohio (a city pretty much in my own backyard).

You really can find art everywhere you go. I know this has been a recurring theme in my posts this week, but it’s simply a fact! The next time you are in a city or town, see it for the first time with your new photographer eyes. Look at the tops of the buildings, the grates in the street around trees, old windows, old doorways, plants that sprout up new life in cracks in the pavement, etc. All of these elements have their own unique beauty and artistic merit.

It’s not just the buildings themselves that can become art; it’s also what is in the buildings. Look at the light fixtures, wood grains in the floorboards, texture of the walls, fabric of the curtains, etc. Even a rusty bolt on an old industrial machine can make a statement in the right context. See that rusty cart with the blue chipped paint? What does that say about our society’s disposable mentality? Does it remind you of the phrase “rust belt” so commonly used in Ohio? Things like this make me think, make me look at objects and buildings in urban settings much differently. That difference is what makes it art. If it makes you think, brings about an emotion, starts a conversation – then you have found art.

My love of nature also inspires me to look where nature and the urban landscape meet. I am so amazed by plants that grow anywhere: sidewalk cracks, gravel pits, window wells, gutters. Because I prefer nature over man-made any day, I love to take pictures of nature winning! It’s another way to make people stop and think for a minute. Do we really think we have power over nature? Do we really think we can stop it from healing itself and taking back what we have so carefully paved? I think nature can answer that time and again with a resounding no! And photography is a great way to show this fact.

I have really enjoyed sharing my photography stories, tips, thoughts, and art with you all this week. I truly hope you learned something, enjoyed the posts, became more aware of your surroundings, and are now thinking in new ways. I hope to hear from you via the web, you can find me at Twitter, Facebook, or Etsy. Enjoy life and to quote a famous photographer:
“Everywhere is something which could be beautiful. You must only to see and to know what and how to take off, to crop from the infinity.” ~ Florin Constantinescu

A huge round of applause to Angie for being this week’s Guest Greenie and for teaching us new ways to look for photo opportunities in our everyday lives.
