Green Community:: Sandoway House Nature Center

Another fabulous nature center that we visited on our trip to Southern Florida is Sandoway House Nature Center in Delray Beach, Florida. Surprisingly, in all of the years that we lived in Southern Florida, this was our first visit to Sandoway House Nature Center. We were overwhelmed with the center, since from the outside, it looks only like a quaint beach house, but once you enter you are immediately greeted by the resident Blue and Gold Macaw, Gopher Tortoise, Florida Box Turtle and Fresh Water Turtles. Our first thought was, “Why didn’t we visit Sandoway House when we lived here?” The beach house has been turned into a fabulous museum full of a lovely seashell collection donated by Ann and Albert Becker that includes over 10,000 shells from all around the world. You can also enjoy the Microscope Lab, Library and Resource Rooms, and our favorite the Coral Reef Ecosystem.

We were in luck, just as we arrived we were told that they were getting ready to feed the Nurse Sharks, Puffer Fish, Stingrays and Reef Fish. Even nicer, we were the only people there at the time. We were able to ask the director any question that we, well, that Eben could think of. Sandoway House Nature Center has two juvenile Nurse Sharks and one baby. We loved watching them swim around, especially the baby who was extremely active for a Nurse Shark. Luckily, they also had a baby Sting Ray that was tiny and adorable. Our favorite parts were watching the Nurse Sharks eat directly out of the director’s hand and watching the baby Sting Ray. Jayson’s favorite was the giant Puffer Fish and I loved the fact that the animals tank was made from the old converted pool in the backyard.

It was a fun way to spend the morning supporting another wonderful nature center. You can adopt a Sandoway Nature Center animal here and if you are ever in Palm Beach, Florida, stop by and check it out.

Green Your Thanksgiving with Parducci Sustainable Wine.

I was delighted to receive two bottles of lovely wine from Mendocino Wine Company in the mail last week. We received a bottle of Parducci California 2008 Pinot Noir $ 12 and a bottle of 2008 Parducci Mendocini County Chardonnay $11.

I wanted to enjoy the wines with the mister, so a date night was planned. Saturday night, we put Eben to bed and the mister and I started our date night with samples of these lovely wines with a fresh baguette and local organic Gouda and brie cheeses. We then had a second glass of each when the mister served our fabulous organic hibachi dinner that he had prepared. We were immediately smitten with Parducci, again. We have loved their wines in the past but both of these wines quickly became some of our favorites.

We found the 2008 Pinot Noir to go wonderfully with the fillet, scallops and shrimp that Mr. Sweet Greens had grilled. We thought the Pinot Noir was very earthy and full. It has a lovely bouquet aroma of juicy berries. It was a wonderful way to start the tastings for the evening.

The 2008 Chardonnay was my absolute favorite. I love the crisp, clean taste and the aromas of apple and pear were fabulous. I love, love, love this wine and think that it went perfectly with the fresh baguette and local organic cheeses.

Both of these wines are very easy to drink, so be careful. Both of these wines would be a wonderful addition to your Thanksgiving dinner. You could serve the fantastic 2008 Chardonnay with appetizers and dessert and then enjoy the 2008 Pinot Noir with the main course. Your guests will be delighted and excited.

As always Parducci is locally owned and operated with all of their grapes coming from sustainable family farms. Parducci is 100% green powered (it is the 1st U.S. carbon neutral winery) and all of their wines come in Earth friendly packaging. You still have time to purchase your Parducci wine for Thanksgiving dinner and all of your other upcoming holiday needs. Parducci wine is affordable and delicious, these wines would also make fabulous holiday and hostess gifts.

Green Your Holidays with Organic Cotton Pajamas for Christmas Eve

We visited our Costco Saturday night to pick up a few essentials and to see if they had organic turkeys for Thanksgiving. They do, Yay! While we were there, the mister suggested that we look for pajamas for Eben. I usually buy him pajamas for the holidays, but he is in desperate need of warm pajamas, since his no longer fit and I don’t think he could wait much longer. I wasn’t sure, if we would find anything Eco friendly in the pajama section at Costco. However, what to my wandering eyes should appear, but Children’s 100% SKAL Certified Organic Cotton Pajamas. Even the tags were 100% recycled paperboard, printed with soy ink. I was a little stunned and overjoyed. They were a great deal at $11.99 for a 2 piece set and they had sweet designs perfect for any little boy or girl. Eben picked the space and dinosaur pajamas.

Guess what? It is Winter Again!

Sunday morning, we awoke to a fresh blanket of snow on everything. This Colorado weather really baffles me. Last week, it was so warm that only a light jacket was necessary. Today, we are building snowmen with big rosy cheeks. {I added all natural red food coloring with water to a spray bottle to make our snowmen rosy} Who knows what next week will bring?
