5 Easy Sustainable Beauty Routine Swaps

Your beauty routine should make you feel refreshed and radiant—but many conventional beauty products are filled with toxic ingredients and excessive plastic packaging that harm both our health and the environment. From harmful chemicals in skincare to single-use plastics in cosmetics, the beauty industry creates over 120 billion units of packaging waste every year! It’s time for sustainable beauty!😱♻️

If you’re looking to detox your beauty routine in a way that’s better for your skin AND the planet, this guide will show you how to switch to non-toxic, sustainable beauty products without creating more waste. 🌿✨

💄 1. Read the Ingredients & Ditch Harmful Chemicals

Many beauty products contain questionable ingredients that can be harsh on your skin and harmful to the environment. Look out for these top toxic offenders:

🚨 Ingredients to Avoid:
❌ Parabens (linked to hormone disruption)
❌ Phthalates (often found in fragrances & harmful to reproductive health)
❌ Sulfates (SLS/SLES can strip natural oils & irritate the skin)
❌ Synthetic Fragrances (can contain hidden chemicals)
❌ Plastic Microbeads (pollute oceans & harm marine life)

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of conventional products with long lists of unpronounceable chemicals, opt for clean beauty brands with organic, plant-based ingredients that nourish your skin without toxins.

💚 Best Non-Toxic Beauty Brands:
🌱 Ilia Beauty – Clean, high-performance makeup.
🌿 OSEA Malibu – Ocean-inspired, toxin-free skincare.
💧 100% Pure – Natural, fruit-pigmented makeup & skincare.
🧴 Pacifica – Incredible collection of clean beauty products.

♻️ 2. Switch to Refillable, Recyclable & Compostable Packaging

Plastic beauty packaging is one of the biggest waste contributors in the industry, with most items ending up in landfills or oceans. One of the easiest ways to detox your beauty routine is by choosing packaging that’s refillable, recyclable, or compostable.

✔️ Ways to Reduce Beauty Packaging Waste:
💄 Look for brands that offer refillable makeup & skincare.
🛍 Recycle empty containers through in-store take-back programs.
🌎 Buy from companies using glass, aluminum, or compostable materials instead of plastic.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of single-use plastic deodorant tubes, try a refillable, zero-waste option.

💚 Best Sustainable Beauty Packaging Brands:
♻️ Elate Beauty – Bamboo & refillable makeup.
🌱 Meow Meow Tweet – Compostable deodorants & skincare.
🔄 Kjaer Weis – Luxury, refillable beauty products.

🧴 3. Opt for Solid Beauty Products to Cut Plastic

Switching to solid beauty bars is one of the easiest ways to eliminate waste in your beauty routine. Solid products last longer, require less packaging, and are often free from unnecessary preservatives.

✔️ Best Solid Beauty Swaps:
🛁 Shampoo & Conditioner Bars instead of bottled products.
🧼 Facial Cleansing Bars instead of plastic tubes.
🪒 Solid Lotion Bars instead of pump bottles.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying liquid shampoo in a plastic bottle, switch to a shampoo bar that lasts twice as long and creates zero waste!

💚 Best Zero-Waste Solid Beauty Brands:
🛁 Ethique – Shampoo, conditioner & body bars.
🧴 Lush – Naked packaging-free skincare & haircare.

🌎 4. Choose Multi-Use Products to Reduce Waste

Instead of buying dozens of beauty products, simplify your routine by choosing multi-purpose items that save space, reduce packaging, and streamline your regimen.

✔️ Best Multi-Use Beauty Products:
💄 Tinted Lip & Cheek Balms – One product, multiple uses!
💧 Face Oils That Double as Moisturizers & Hair Treatments.
🧴 All-in-One Cleansing Oils That Remove Makeup & Cleanse Skin. I adore Pacifica’s Melt for You Moisturizing Cleansing Oil

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying separate highlighters, blushes, and lip tints, choose an all-in-one balm for a natural, effortless glow!

💚 Best Multi-Use Clean Beauty Brands:
RMS Beauty – Coconut oil-based, multi-use cosmetics.
💖 Cocokind – Simple, multi-purpose skincare solutions.
🌿 Tata Harper – Luxury, all-in-one skincare formulas.

💚 5. Recycle & Dispose of Old Beauty Products Responsibly

Even with the best sustainable swaps, we all have old beauty products that eventually need to be thrown out. Instead of tossing them in the trash, make sure to recycle or properly dispose of them.

✔️ How to Responsibly Dispose of Beauty Products:
♻️ Check your local recycling program for accepted beauty packaging.
🔄 Use beauty take-back programs (like MAC, Kiehl’s, & Lush) to recycle empties.
🚫 Properly dispose of expired products to prevent harmful chemicals from polluting the environment.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of throwing out old mascara wands, donate them to wildlife rescue organizations that use them to clean animals! Wands for Wildlife is a great program to check out!

💚 Best Beauty Recycling Programs:
♻️ TerraCycle Zero-Waste Beauty Program – Send back empties from any brand.
🔄 Credo Beauty Recycling Program – A clean beauty retailer that recycles used products.
💋 MAC’s Back-to-MAC Program – Return empty containers for free products.

🌿 Detox Your Beauty Routine the Green Way!

Switching to a low-waste, non-toxic beauty routine doesn’t have to be overwhelming! By making small, mindful swaps—like choosing refillable packaging, using multi-purpose products, and recycling responsibly—you can create a cleaner, greener beauty routine that’s good for your skin AND the planet.

How to Shop Sustainably Without Breaking the Bank

Shopping sustainably often comes with the misconception that it’s too expensive or only for people with big budgets. But the truth is, making eco-friendly choices doesn’t have to cost a fortune. In fact, sustainable shopping can actually save you money in the long run by focusing on quality over quantity, reducing waste, and making mindful purchasing decisions.

If you’re looking to live a greener lifestyle without overspending, here are some practical, budget-friendly ways to shop sustainably and make a difference for both your wallet and the planet.

♻️ 1. Buy Less, Choose Wisely

One of the most sustainable shopping habits is simply buying less. Instead of shopping on impulse, focus on quality over quantity and invest in items that are well-made, long-lasting, and truly needed.

✔️ Ask yourself before buying:

  • Do I really need this, or is it just a want?
  • Will I use this often, or will it sit unused?
  • Can I buy this secondhand or borrow it instead?

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying multiple fast-fashion pieces, invest in timeless, high-quality clothing that lasts years instead of seasons. This is something that I have done for years, I resist the urge to purchase the latest trends, and instead have really focused to build a high-quality wardrobe that has lasted me years!

💚 Where to Shop Smart:

  • Everlane – High-quality, ethically made essentials.
  • Pact – Organic, sustainable clothing at budget-friendly prices.

🛍️ 2. Shop Secondhand & Thrift Stores

Buying secondhand is one of the most budget-friendly ways to shop sustainably. It keeps perfectly good items out of landfills while also being significantly cheaper than buying new.

✔️ Best Things to Buy Secondhand:

  • Clothes & shoes 👗👞
  • Furniture & home decor 🛋️
  • Books & toys 📚🧸
  • Electronics & appliances 📱

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying new kids’ clothes that they’ll outgrow quickly, shop secondhand for high-quality brands at a fraction of the price! I lived for this when Eben was little – I knew he would only fit into a particular size for a short period of time. Then, when he did outgrow the clothes, I would resell them on eBay and use that money to buy his next set of clothes!

💚 Where to Shop Secondhand Online:

  • ThredUp – Affordable secondhand clothing.
  • Facebook Marketplace – Buy & sell locally to avoid shipping waste.
  • eBay – A great place to find secondhand gadgets & appliances.

🌱 3. Buy in Bulk & Reduce Packaging Waste

Buying in bulk is an easy way to reduce waste and save money on food, cleaning supplies, and household essentials.

✔️ How to Shop Bulk Sustainably:

  • Bring your own reusable containers & cloth bags.
  • Choose dry goods like rice, beans, pasta, and oats.
  • Look for refill stations for things like soap, detergent, and oils.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying small plastic spice jars, refill glass containers at a bulk store for less waste and cost. We always buy in the largest quantity that we will actually use!

💚 Where to Shop Bulk:

🛒 4. Support Ethical & Sustainable Brands on a Budget

Sustainable brands don’t always mean expensive! Many brands are working to offer affordable, ethical, and eco-friendly alternatives to everyday essentials.

✔️ How to Shop Smart:

  • Look for brands with transparent sustainability policies.
  • Buy directly from eco-conscious brands to avoid fast-fashion markups.
  • Watch for seasonal sales & discounts on sustainable brands.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying plastic-packaged beauty products, look for refillable, compostable, or package-free options to save money and reduce waste. Right now, my favorite is Elate Beauty for their zero waste makeup with refillable, recyclable, and compostable products!

💚 Budget-Friendly Sustainable Brands:

  • Girlfriend Collective – Affordable, sustainable activewear.
  • Etee – Plastic-free home & personal care products.
  • Allbirds – Sustainable, comfy shoes made from natural materials.

🏡 5. Choose Reusables Over Disposables

Investing in reusable products can save you hundreds of dollars over time by replacing single-use items that constantly need repurchasing.

✔️ Best Reusable Swaps:

  • 🥤 Reusable water bottles instead of bottled water.
  • ☕ Stainless steel coffee cups instead of paper cups.
  • 🥪 Silicone snack bags instead of plastic baggies.
  • 🧻 Cloth napkins instead of paper towels.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of constantly buying plastic razors, invest in a safety razor that will last a lifetime and reduce waste. We’ve always used cloth napkins in our home, and if you buy a quality set they last for years (seriously, we have had our current set for over a decade!)

💚 Affordable Reusable Swaps:

💡 6. Be a Conscious Consumer & Avoid Greenwashing

Not every product labeled “green” or “eco-friendly” is actually sustainable—some brands use greenwashing to appear more ethical than they are.

✔️ How to Spot Real Sustainable Products:

  • Look for third-party certifications like Fair Trade, GOTS (organic textiles), and Leaping Bunny (cruelty-free).
  • Read ingredient & material lists to ensure they match eco-friendly claims.
  • Support small, local, and ethical businesses over mass-produced products.

🌿 Eco-Smart Swap: Instead of buying fast fashion “eco” collections, invest in genuinely sustainable brands or shop secondhand for pre-loved quality items.

💚 Helpful Green Shopping Resources:

🌎 Small Changes Make a Big Impact

Shopping sustainably doesn’t mean spending more—it means spending wisely. By making small, intentional choices—buying less, choosing secondhand, investing in reusables, and supporting ethical brands—you can live a greener life without breaking the bank.

Have a Lovely Weekend + A Few Green Things

Hello, Eco Friends! 🌿 The weekend is here, and I couldn’t be more excited to slow down, make homemade pizza, and cozy up with a movie. Spring is just around the corner, and I’m already dreaming of sunshine, garden-fresh greens, and eco-friendly outdoor adventures. But for now, it’s still a bit chilly—so we’re embracing the indoor vibes!

Eben is home this week for spring break! 🎉 He’s been busy doing observation hours for his Master’s degree, so we’ve only been catching up over dinner. Tonight, we’re taking it slow with homemade pizzas in our Gozney. I surprised Jayson with it as a holiday gift when we moved to the Banner Elk mountains, and let me tell you—it was so worth it! Living in the mountains means going out for dinner is a trek, and since we love pizza, bread, pretzels (you get it!), the Gozney has been a game-changer for our outdoor space. We use it all the time!

But before I unplug for the weekend (and dig into some pizza!), here are a few green things to inspire your days ahead:

🍃 Zero-Waste Lunchbox Inspo: We created a super fun March Madness promo (including photo shoot!) for ECOlunchbox! 🏀Check out our easy, delicious recipes for the Busy Mom MVP, Office Pro MVP, Road Trip Warrior MVP, and Student Champ MVP! Plus, you can grab 30% off the MVP collection while you’re there!

🍃 A Fun Read: Go Forth and Forgage – I’m loving this guide to foraging over 50 of the most common edible and medicinal North American mushrooms. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about wild mushrooms (or dream of foraging your own food), this book is a must! 🍄

🍃 DIY Green Cleaning Hack: Forget store-bought sprays—this 3-ingredient, all-natural cleaner will leave your home sparkling and toxin-free. (Hint: it involves lemon essential oil!)

🍃 The Perfect Pretzel Sandwich: We’ve worked with Smart School House for years, and we’re obsessed with this Pretzel Sandwich recipe! 🥨 Who knew pretzels could be the perfect base for a next-level sandwich?

🍃 How to Raise Eco-Conscious Kids: Want to teach your kids about sustainability in a fun, hands-on way? Here are some fun ways to get started.

Wishing you a restful, nature-filled weekend! Enjoy the little green moments and don’t forget to take a deep breath of that fresh, crisp air.

Sweet Greens 🌿

The Ultimate Cooler Backpack for Hikers, RVers & Paddleboarders: Titan by Arctic Zone 24-Can Backpack Cooler

Since moving to Banner Elk, NC, my husband (Jayson) and I have embraced daily hiking as part of our lifestyle. Every morning we hit the trails for a 1.5 hour hike (which is my favorite part of the day) or a full-day trek through the Blue Ridge Mountains on the weekends. On our longer hikes, we always pack a picnic to enjoy along the way in a backpack cooler.

The same for our long paddleboarding trips or days on the beach, we always pack a lunch because we have no idea how long we’ll actually be gone! That’s where the Titan by Arctic Zone 24-Can Backpack Cooler has become an essential companion.

Why We Love the Titan by Arctic Zone Cooler Backpack

After testing countless cooler bags, we’ve found that this one checks all the boxes for our needs—especially for long hikes, RV trips, and paddleboarding adventures. Here’s why:

Ice Pack Slots Keep Food Cold & Dry

One of my biggest pet peeves with traditional coolers is that ice melts and soaks everything inside. Even when we use ice packs, the condensation always gets on the food. The Titan cooler backpack solves this issue with dedicated slots for ice packs, keeping our food chilled without direct contact with ice or condensation. No more soggy sandwiches or wet snacks!

Perfect for Long Hikes & Outdoor Adventures

When we head out on a long hike, we always bring this cooler along—unless the trail is especially treacherous. It does have some weight to it, especially when fully packed, so we skip it for ultra-steep or technical climbs. However, for moderate hikes or strolls with my father in law or Olive, our Frenchie, or where we plan to picnic with a view, it’s perfect! It really shines if we are taking it to the beach for the day.

Great for RV Travel & Paddleboarding

We’re also keeping this cooler in our RV so it’s ready to grab when we travel. It’s perfect for paddleboarding—we can pack it with drinks and snacks, and it keeps everything cold for hours while we’re out on the water. The weight isn’t an issue when we are paddleboarding, because we let it ride on the board or when we’re sitting on the beach.

Easy to Clean & Use

Spills happen (especially when packing homemade trail snacks!), but this cooler wipes clean effortlessly. It’s also designed for easy access, so we don’t have to dig around to grab what we need quickly. This was a huge issue with our Yeti Tote Soft Cooler. Even when we are paddleboarding, having to dig through the Yeti (while the closure wants to snap closed on my arm) is a pain! But we do absolutely love our Yeti Hard Cooler for road trips!

Eco-Friendly Benefits

As someone who is passionate about sustainable living, I love that this cooler helps reduce waste and environmental impact in several ways:

  • No Disposable Ice Packs or Bags of Ice Needed – The built-in ice pack slots eliminate the need for single-use plastic ice bags, which often leak and create waste.
  • Long-Lasting & Reusable – Unlike cheap coolers that break after a season, this backpack is built to last, reducing the need for frequent replacements.
  • Leak-Proof & Easy to Clean – Since it’s easy to wipe clean, I don’t have to waste paper towels or chemical-heavy cleaners. A simple rinse is usually enough!
  • Encourages Packing Your Own Food – Instead of relying on store-bought snacks in plastic packaging, we can prep homemade meals and avoid unnecessary waste while hiking and traveling.

Small changes add up, and choosing durable, reusable gear like this helps us enjoy the outdoors without adding to landfill waste.

Is It the Right Cooler Backpack for You?

If you’re looking for a durable, well-insulated, and easy-to-use backpack cooler, the Titan by Arctic Zone is a fantastic choice. It’s ideal for:
✔️ Hikers & Outdoor Enthusiasts – Great for long hikes with picnic stops, really shines when you are hanging out on the beach or fishing for the day!
✔️ RV Travelers – Compact enough to store and grab for day trips. It’s easier to grab and go then our Yeti hard cooler.
✔️ Paddleboarders & Beachgoers – Keeps food and drinks cold without messy ice packs.

While it’s a bit on the heavier side when fully packed, the comfort, insulation, and innovative design make it well worth it for everyday outdoor adventures.

Raising Eco-Conscious Kids: Fun Ways to Teach Sustainability

As parents, we all want to raise kind, responsible, and thoughtful eco-conscious kids who care about the world around them (I’m so happy to say that I raised one of those kiddos!). Want to hear something wild? I started this blog 16 years ago when Eben was only 7! Now, he’s almost 24 and working on his Masters Degree! WHAT!?!?

One of the best ways to do this is by teaching them sustainability—helping them understand how their actions impact the planet and empowering them to make greener choices.

But sustainability doesn’t have to be boring or overwhelming for kids! In fact, the best way to teach eco-conscious habits is through fun, hands-on activities that make green living feel exciting and natural. 🌎

Here are some simple, engaging ways to teach your kids about sustainability while creating meaningful habits that will last a lifetime.

🌱 1. Grow a Garden Together

Nothing connects kids to nature like getting their hands in the soil! Planting a garden teaches them where food comes from and how to care for living things. Plus, growing their own vegetables, herbs, or flowers helps them appreciate nature’s cycles and reduce food waste.

🌿 Try This:
✔️ Let your child choose a plant to grow—easy ones include cherry tomatoes, basil, and carrots.
✔️ Decorate garden markers with painted rocks or wooden signs.
✔️ Teach them how to compost kitchen scraps and use the compost to feed the garden.

🌍 Eco-Lesson: Plants need water, sunlight, and care to thrive—just like our planet! Taking care of plants helps kids develop responsibility and mindfulness toward nature.

💚 Helpful Resources:
🌱 Back to the Roots Organic Mushroom Growing Kit – A fun way to grow food indoors!
🌻 Seed Savers Exchange – Heirloom, non-GMO seeds for your garden.

♻️ 2. Make Recycling & Upcycling a Game

Kids love sorting and organizing, so turning recycling into a game is a great way to get them excited about reducing waste.

♻️ Try This:
✔️ Set up labeled recycling bins and challenge kids to sort items correctly.
✔️ Create an upcycling craft station where they can turn old jars, cardboard boxes, and fabric scraps into art projects.
✔️ Play a “Recycling Detective” game—have kids find items around the house that can be repurposed instead of thrown away.

🌍 Eco-Lesson: Recycling helps keep materials out of landfills, and reusing items in creative ways reduces waste even more!

💚 Helpful Resources:
♻️ TerraCycle Zero-Waste Boxes – Recycle hard-to-recycle items with your kids.
🎨 Green Kid Crafts Subscription Box – Monthly eco-friendly craft kits made from upcycled materials.

🍎 3. Pack a Zero-Waste Lunch

Teaching kids about sustainability starts with daily habits, and packing a plastic-free, zero-waste lunch is a great way to make eco-conscious choices a routine.

🥪 Try This:
✔️ Use stainless steel or silicone lunch containers instead of plastic baggies.
✔️ Pack reusable water bottles and utensils to cut down on single-use plastics.
✔️ Encourage kids to help plan their lunch menu using local, organic ingredients when possible.

🌍 Eco-Lesson: Every small swap—like using a reusable snack bag instead of a plastic one—adds up to a big impact over time!

💚 Helpful Resources:
🥪 ECOLunchbox Stainless Steel Containers – Durable, plastic-free lunch solutions. FUN FACT! ECOlunchbox has been a client of my digital marketing agency for over 10 years!
🚰 Hydro Flask Kids Water Bottle – A reusable water bottle that keeps drinks cold all day.

🚶‍♂️ 4. Go on a “Green Adventure

Kids love exploring the outdoors, and nature is the best classroom for teaching sustainability.

🌿 Try This:
✔️ Take a hike or nature walk, and bring a “trash treasure bag” to collect litter.
✔️ Visit a farmers’ market and teach kids about local, organic food.
✔️ Plan a no-tech day outdoors—camp in the backyard, build a fort with natural materials, or have a picnic with all compostable or reusable items.

🌍 Eco-Lesson: Nature is beautiful and valuable—it’s up to us to take care of it!

💚 Helpful Resources:
🎒 Keep>Going First Aid Mini Kit – A sustainable, compact first-aid kit for outdoor adventures. (Watch for a blog coming up on this green goody!
🌱 National Wildlife Federation Nature Guidebooks – Fun guides to help kids identify birds, insects, and plants.

📚 5. Read Books About Sustainability

Reading is a great way to start conversations about sustainability with kids. There are many beautiful, inspiring books that teach them about nature, climate change, and protecting the planet.

📖 Try This:
✔️ Read one eco-themed book per week, then discuss simple ways to apply the lessons.
✔️ Create a “Green Library” in your home with books about the environment.
✔️ Let kids write and illustrate their own book about how they can help the Earth!

🌍 Eco-Lesson: Stories help kids connect with nature and feel inspired to take action.

💚 Great Books for Eco-Conscious Kids:
📗 The Lorax by Dr. Seuss – A classic story about protecting trees.
📙 What a Waste by Jess French – A fun look at how we can reduce waste.
📘 The Watcher by Jeanette Winter – A biography of Jane Goodall’s work with animals.

🌎 Raising Eco-Conscious Kids Starts with Small, Fun Changes

Raising eco-conscious kids isn’t about perfection—it’s about helping them understand their connection to the world around them and making sustainable choices second nature.

By turning green habits into fun activities, kids will naturally develop a love for the planet and feel empowered to make a difference.
