Hello, Friends! How was your weekend? Did you host or attend a spooky Halloween party? We had our family Halloween party on Saturday night! It was also Mr. Sweet Greens birthday [he hadn’t been feeling well, but he was a trooper and dressed up for the party!] We had a lot of fun and all three of our costumes were made from items that we already had on hand or that we picked up from the thrift store.
Mr. Sweet Greens and I went with a Voodoo Theme. Here is how we made the costumes:
I took an old sheet and stained it using coffee and tea [in a spray bottle] and a mixture of paint + water [in a spray bottle too]. Then I pinned it to a old belt, draping the fabric as I pinned it. I secured a stained piece of cheesecloth over the top of the skirt and used another piece as a scarf. I used a sleeveless button up shirt from my closet and stained it using the same process. I then made bundles of raffia, spanish moss, feathers and other goodies from my craft closet and pinned them around my waist. I accessorized with my own funky jewelry and I made a pin cushion that was also secured to my waist. I got the inspiration for this costume from Martha Stewart, I didn’t want it to be as scary, you can see the inspiration piece here.
For Mr. Sweet Greens outfit, we picked up a pair of white scrubs from the thrift store and he shredded and stained it using the same process. We made his wristbands by cutting up an old belt. His jewelry was made using trinkets and necklaces from the thrift store.

Here is a quick run-down of how our evening went:
After dark, our guests arrived – they were greeted by Mr. Sweet Greens, Eben and myself in our spooky entryway. We switched all of our lights out with black lights and accented our apothecary jar table with tea lights.
Once the guest walked upstairs, they entered our haunted living room, also known as, party central. We used cheesecloth, our own Halloween decorations, spooky music and heirloom pumpkins to give the room a fun, spooky feel.
Then, the children walked through our spooky witches curtains and down our haunted hallway. Eben drew spooky pictures to put in our photo frames that line the hallway. We placed the tombstones that Mr. Sweet Greens made and our Halloween lanterns at the end of the hall – in the background was a spooky silhouette.
For appetizers we served organic tortilla chips with your choice of hummus, salsa or guacamole. Dinner was homemade organic Chili with tons of toppings and rolls. For goodies the children decorated organic sugar cookies and enjoyed organic chocolate + peanut butter rice crispy treats. And of course, we had to serve a little candy on the side for the kiddos [it is Halloween after all!]
