Green Tip: Remove Your Shoes

Taking your shoes off before walking into your home is a healthy habit for your family. This is a healthy habit because you won’t track in any guck, but most importantly because the bottom of your shoes is exposed to so many chemicals, pesticides, herbicides, insecticides, and toxins. You could have possibly walked through gasoline, soot, or any number of other toxins and when you crossed the grass, chances are you walked through pesticides, herbicides, and insecticides.

So next time you come home, remove your shoes for the safety of your family.
Do you take your shoes off before entering your home? The homes of others?

I usually take off my shoes when I get home, they go right into slippers or flip-flops. I usually don’t take off my shoes in other people’s homes unless they request that I do. Or unless I’m traveling in Thailand or another Asian country, because it’s just the norm to take off your shoes whenever you come inside. That’s how it is in my yoga place, too.

I never had thought of the toxins factor, I always thought of it as a respect factor in others’ homes and as a comfort factor in my own home.

I hadn’t really thought of it either. I was raised in a house where you just took your shoes off before entering and was taught to take them off when entering someone else’s home…but one day I started to think of the possible chemicals/toxics on the bottom of shoes and thought to myself..that is a better reason to remove them.

    Hi Kara,
I think it is a great idea to keep your floors clean and to keep possible toxin/chemicals out of your carpets and rugs. Double Bonus.

We take our shoes off before we go past the entry way in our home. Sometimes it is uncomfortable asking others to take their shoes off when they enter. Leaving a couple of pair neatly in the entry way sort of clues people into taking off their shoes.

I went to a party once at a home where they did not wear shoes in the house, they did a cool thing and put a basket of cozy white socks by the front door for guests to wear.

    Hi Madonna,
I agree, sometimes it is hard. We don’t wear our shoes and the house and I have to admit it is sometimes hard to ask. I love the cozy white socks idea. Another one I have seen is a basket full of flip flops in all different sizes and colors…super cute and fun.
