Superfood of the Week: Mangosteen

This week’s Superfood is mangosteen and I have to be completely honest, I had never heard of it before. Mangosteen is a tropical evergreen tree with an edible deep purple fruit. Supposedly it is sweet and tangy – almost like a citrusy peach. How about that? Mangosteen is a superfood due to its xanthones, fiber, essential minerals, amino acids and antioxidants. Not bad for a fruit, right?

Have you tried mangosteen before? Did you like it?

How to Make Miniature Organic Conversation Heart Cakes

Looking for a little conversation heart treat without all the artificial color-filled candy? Me too. That is why I came up with these miniature organic conversation heart cakes over at Inhabitots. These little goodies are perfect for a Valentine’s Day party or a sweet treat after a Valentine’s dinner for two. Most of the ingredients you probably already have on hand and they only take a few minutes to make – enjoy.

How to Make Plastic Bag Valentine’s Day Friendship Bracelets

Valentine’s Day cards, stickers, temporary tattoos and other small plastic trinkets are usually loved for an afternoon and then simply tossed into the trash. And the amount of candy consumed rivals Halloween! This year, Eben and I wanted to forgo purchasing any type of Valentine’s Day cards or goodies. Instead we decided to make friendship bracelets for all of his classmates and friends. We made these friendship bracelets from plastic bags and then secured them to a card made from paper, both of which slated for the recycling bin. If you have already kicked the plastic bag habit, (good for you!) you can use bread and other food bags for your bracelets, like we did. The result, a Valentine’s Day worthy friendship bracelet that didn’t cost a penny, has zero impact on the environment and taught Eben how to braid. Jump over to Inhabitots for the directions on making plastic bag Valentine’s Day friendship bracelets with your children.

Sustain Design Studio: miniHOME

Wow. I am a little smitten with Sustain Design Studio’s miniHOME. I still love the idea of living in a tiny Eco-friendly home. And this one would fit the bill nicely with a great floor plan and fun colors. I wonder how it would hold up in hurricanes?
