Book of the Week: The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane

You most likely have heard of Kate DiCamillo’s book The Tale of Despereux – but have you heard of her book, The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane? Out of all of Kate’s book’s this one is my favorite.

The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane is a story of a self absorbed china rabbit named Edward Tulane. He was owned by a girl named Abilene who loved him, treated him with respect and dressed him in only the finest of linens. And then one day, he is lost!

This is a book that we read together as a family, one chapter each night – and we would beg Mr. Sweet Greens to read another. We found ourselves wanting more when the story ended, we fell in love with this snobby rabbit and you and your children will too!

Pelican Island National Wildlife Refuge, Florida

While on our winter holiday camping trip, we visited America’s first wildlife refuge – Pelican Island. In 1903 President Roosevelt signed an executive order establishing Pelican Island as the first federal bird reservation – after bird advocates the American Ornithologist’s Union and the Florida Audubon Society led a successful campaign to pass legislation in Florida calling for the protection of non-game birds. Wow! I am glad these organizations were around to protect all of the lovely birds that us Floridians get to enjoy year round. Here are some of our favorites that we saw on our visit to Pelican Island + a crab.

Winter Camping: Sebastian Inlet, Florida

During the holiday break, my family went camping at Sebastian Inlet State Recreation Center. Sebastian Inlet State Park is known for it’s great surfing and fishing. However, no surfing for us – it was a cold weekend, instead we spent our time beach-combing, strolling through the nearby nature centers and treasure hunting.

Eben spent a better part of one day collecting, examining and returning these giant starfish to the surf. They were everywhere, it was a fantastic experience!

We also spent an entire afternoon, checking out the artifacts from the 1715 Spanish Fleet that sank along the treasure coast at the McLarty Museum. After seeing all of gold bars, doubloons, jewelry and other artifacts, we couldn’t help but walk along the coastline looking for treasures. Above: Eben is trying to trick us into thinking that he found treasure – no such luck!

This weekend, we are off to another adventure – this time on Florida’s west coast. I can’t wait to share with you.

Do you have a favorite camping spot in Florida?
I would love to hear about your experiences.
