REVIEW: Blue Orange Games are Fun for Eco Kids On the Go

Our family is a huge fan of board games – we have a large trunk coffee table that is full of games to play together. We try to spend a couple of nights every week playing board games after dinner. And we even have board games in our RV – they are perfect for rainy afternoons or nights that are simply too chilly for a campfire.

Recently we found the perfect games for on-the-go entertainment in Blue Orange Games. Each game is small and comes packaged in a tin – these are perfect for throwing in my handbag or the glove compartment in my car. I pull them out when we are in the waiting room at the doctor’s office, or traveling for long periods of time via car or airplane. Eben and I received samples of Tell Tale and Spot It to review and we found the games to be simple and fun.

Tell Tale: Take a Journey Into Storyland is a game where the players create stories based on the pictures on each card. You can follow the rules that are included, however we found it fun to make up stories about what we saw as we went through the deck.
Spot It is a simple matching game with a huge fun factor. You split the deck equally amongst all of the players and you match the likeness between the cards laid down and the cards that you have in your hand. The object is to get rid of your cards first – which takes a lot of concentration.

These games would make great Valentine’s Day gifts or a fun way to surprise children at the beginning of a long car ride or when they are bored at the doctor’s office. And the best part, Blue Orange Games plants two trees for every tree they use for the construction of the game. Fantastic.

What simple, fun, eco-friendly games have your found to be perfect for traveling?

Have a Lovely Green Weekend + A Few Green Things

Hello, Friends. How was your week? I am ready for the weekend! We have plans for dinner out with friends tomorrow night – should be fun! And I think it would be a perfect weekend to hit the farmer’s market – it is suppose to be in the 60°’s. While I pull out my sweaters (Ha!) here are few green things to check out this weekend:

– Martha has some of the yummiest looking vegetarian recipes!
– I love these subway token necklaces.
– Don’t allow your family to fall victim to junk food marketing.
– Would you use a mason jar travel mug?
– The next thing you know, your children will be printing their own toys!
– I love this vintage mail sorter turned mudroom organizer.

I hope you have a cozy weekend and enjoy a yummy cup of Joe or two!

5 Fun Eco-Friendly Ways to Keep Your Children Active During Winter

January weather can be cold and dark, which makes it easy for your children to come home from school and set into hibernation mode. Don’t give in and let them fall under the spell of video games, television or the computer. Instead, get creative and and get them outside. They may complain at first that it is too cold, however when you have fun activities planned the complaining will turn into enthusiasm. Read on to learn my favorite ways to get children outside after school on cold winter days.

1. Go Wildlife Watching
Bundle up, grab your binoculars, cameras, and field journals and head to your nearest natural area. Your children will be surprised to see that many animals do not hibernate during the winter, instead they are quite active. Depending on where you live, there are many animals that you are sure to come across – from birds,  and deer to rabbits and foxes.

2. Move Snack Time Outside
Instead of sitting in front of the television for after school snack time – move it outside. Send the children outside to play in the snow while you heat up organic hot cocoa and warm organic muffins or cookies for them to enjoy outside. Ask them to build chairs in the snow to sit on or a table to hold the hot cocoa you will be delivering – the key is to make sure that they get enough outside play time before you take out the snacks.

3. Jump on Your Bicycles
Bundle up, grab your bike helmets and then hit the road for a bicycle ride. Just because there is snow on the ground doesn’t necessarily mean that there is snow on the sidewalks. You can still get great exercise bike riding on those cold afternoons, just make sure to bundle up, pack warm snacks, use reflectors and stay together in a group.

4. Learn a New Winter Sport
When we first moved to Colorado, we had a hard time adjusting to the cold weather. To keep us busy during those long Colorado winters – we started snowboarding and snowshoeing as a family. It was a great way to get outside for the day, get our exercise and then hang out together afterwards with warm cocoa and conversation.

5. Invite the Dogs
A sure way to get Eben outside during those winter months is to send the dogs out first. There is something cute and comical about dogs in the snow. Whether they are bounding through it, eating it, or rolling in it, it is just more fun to play outside with your dogs. Our dogs loved to chase Eben through the snow and he would always land in a laughing heap when they would finally catch him – simply suggesting that he take the dogs outside would always have him heading for the door.

HOW TO: Organize Your Child’s Bedroom for the New Year

Yesterday was a chilly day in South Florida, so we stayed home and did some winter cleaning. First on our list, organize my son’s bedroom. At first he moaned, however once we started getting all of his toys, books, clothing and collectibles organized he smiled and said, “Wow, Mom! Organizing my bedroom really was a good idea, everything looks so nice!” That is one of the nicest things a mom can hear. Getting your child’s bedroom organized is perfect for making your child’s toys easy to find, play with and put away, which in the long run means less broken toys or torn books hitting the landfill. Jump over to Inhabitots to see how Eben and I organized his bedroom completely for the new year.
