Homemade Halloween Costume: Lord Pein from the Graphic Novel Naruto

Hello, Friends! Happy Halloween! I am so excited – I am all dressed up (can you guess what I am?) and can’t wait for this evening’s festivities. This year Eben really wanted to be Lord Pein from the graphic novel Naruto. He sprung this idea on me last Thursday – 1 night before his first middle school Halloween dance. So we rushed home, grabbed an old vampire cape from our dress up closet and some other supplies from the craft bin and got to work. Tons of measuring, cutting and sewing – 3 hours later.

Our homemade version:

What do you think?

Did you make a Halloween costume this year? I would love to see – leave a link in the comments below!

Have a Lovely Weekend + A Few Green Things

Hello, Friends! How are you? Tonight is Eben’s first middle school dance – Oh my goodness! My baby is growing up – you guys! We have been so busy, his Halloween costume was put on the back burner. Last night, Eben and I spent 3 hours creating and sewing his costume using pieces from an old costume and leftover fabric. It was intense! We were able to pull it off and he is super excited – I can’t wait to share photos, stay tuned for those on Monday.

Tomorrow, our best friends are having a dinner party in their new home! I can’t wait to celebrate it with them! Then, on Sunday, the entire family is gathering at Morikami Japanese Gardens to celebrate the mister’s 40th birthday! The big 4-0! It should be a fun weekend packed with fun, friends and family – I am really looking forward to it. While I wrap up the mister’s birthday gifts, here are a few green things to entertain you through the weekend:

– Pottery Barn’s organic bedding is on sale, 40% off!
– As a avid bike rider, I love this silent bike alarm app!
– I love these mini modular systems for growing veggies indoors.
– Still wondering what the Great Pacific Garbage Patch is?
– Have you seen this adorable stick figure baby costume – made with LED lights!
Vegan Pumpkin Spice Latte Waffles via Minimalist Baker – yes, please!

I hope you have a cozy weekend – I was able to wear my riding boots and a sweater today! Hooray for the low 80’s! Ha!

10 DIY Indoor Forts and Play Spaces

One of my favorite childhood activities was making forts with my cousin in our family room. We pretty much had it down to an art and could put together a mean fort in a matter of minutes. Every single blanket, sheet and sleeping bag we could find, coupled with a complex arrangement of furniture and sofa cushions would become a home, school, castle, pirate or rocket ship. Then, lo and behold at some point in the day, my mom would beg that we tear it down and put her house back in order.

We have gathered 10 DIY fort and play space ideas that are a bit more sophisticated than old school piles of pillows and strategically draped blankets, to give you and your little builder some inspiration. And with fall here and winter just around the corner, it’s the perfect time of year to give a kids a haven all their own while indoors during cold spells. The skills that children learn and use while fort building help hone their creativity, workmanship, cooperation, problem-solving, design and imagination. Jump over to Inhabitots to get started and have a fun fort building day!

Target Introduces the Target Sustainable Product Standard

Beginning in October, Target will be asking all of it’s household cleaners, baby care and personal and beauty care vendors to complete a UL Transparency Platform assessment powered by GoodGuide. The goal is for Target to take a step towards more transparency, which will lead to more sustainability in the future.

As the Product Standard matures it will trickle into Target’s product placement and merchandising decisions. I am excited to see more sustainable, eco-friendly products in Target’s stores in the future!

Soaps to Live By Offer a Great Green Organic Clean

When it comes to organic body care products, the one item that my family goes through the quickest is bar soap. It is my favorite body care product to purchase, there are so many excellent choices available and sometimes I admit I pick up soaps based completely on the package design such as these ones, these ones, these ones and these ones.

When I received a package of bar soaps from Soaps to Live By I was excited to try them out! Besides being super pretty, each organic bar soap is handcrafted from natural and organic ingredients like moisturizing coconut oil, sustainable palm oil, pure essential oils, and organic and natural ingredients that nurture your skin and your soul. Each batch is hand poured, hand mixed and hand cut with love right here in the USA. They are rich, creamy and smell so good. You can purchase them separately (think stocking stuffers!) or as a packaged set. Wouldn’t they make a great gift for the holidays?
