10 Simple Water Conservation Tips | Save Water at Home Today!

I feel that conserving water is a naturally a much easier task than conserving energy. You can see many of the ways that you use water each day – you know if you are taking showers that are obscenely long or if you are starting the dishwasher or washer when it is only halfway full. However, if you are  curious about how much water you are using, take my quiz here. Since every drop counts when it comes to water conservation, becoming more aware and making small changes every day can have a huge impact overall.

Read on to discover my 10 favorite ways to conserve water today. Don’t worry, these are super simple!

1. Dishwasher Dreams
When it comes to using your dishwasher, make sure that it is turned to the water-saving mode and that the dryer setting is turned off. It is also a good idea to scrap your dishes before loading them, and only run the dishwasher when it is completely full.

2. Hit the Car Wash
If your area has an eco-friendly car wash, hit it instead of washing over 50 gallons of water down the drain when you wash your car at home.

3. Reuse Your Water
I pack a fresh water bottle in Eben’s backpack every day before school. Many days, that water bottle comes home with water left in it. Instead of pouring that water down the drain, I use it to fill up the dog’s water dishes or to water our houseplants. I also do this with any partially filled water glasses that I find on my family’s nightstands every morning.

4. Use a Glass a Day
Our family likes to reuse our drinking glasses all day long. There is no reason to get a clean glass every single time we need a drink of water and it saves me from having to do a ton of dishes each day!

5. Go Native
When it comes to choosing plants for your home and yard, consider ones that are native to your area and that don’t require an excess amount of water. I also love the idea of having edible gardens and landscaping in yards over water-guzzling grass.

6. Turn It Off
When you are brushing your teeth, rubbing your hands with soap while washing them or shampooing your hair, turn the water off in between. Just think of the water that you will conserve!

7. Get a New Shower Head
If you don’t have an eco-friendly shower head, it’s time to upgrade, it could save you up to 90 gallons of water a day. Can you imagine that?

8. Don’t Wash It
You don’t have to wash your pants, shorts or sweaters every single time that you wear them. I will wear my shorts several times before I launder them, not only does this save a ton of water, but my clothes last much longer too!

9. Choose Efficient Appliances
When you are in the market for a new dishwasher or washing machine, choose an Energy Star model that can save up to 18 gallons of water per load.

10. Reuse Your Linens
Instead of using a new towel every time you take a shower or hit the pool or beach, reuse the same towel for at least a week. I also only wash our pillowcases weekly, they seem to get dirtier than our sheets – our sheets will get laundered less often.

Are You Mom Enough?

Have you seen the recent cover of Time Magazine? On it, Jamie Lynn Grumet a Los Angeles mother who practices attachment parenting, is breast feeding her three year old son. I love that they photographed Jamie Lynn and her son standing up, what a statement!

When Eben was born, I didn’t have a lot of experience with children – I did however know that I wanted to have a natural childbirth and to breastfeed. I had many people close to me say that I should bottle feed, put him in a bouncer/swing and allow Eben to cry it out in his crib at nap and bedtime, or he would become “spoiled” and I would never be able to put him down or leave him with a babysitter. (I secretly hoped I would never have to leave him!) And I even had several people tell me that it was dangerous for Eben to sleep with me. However, I decided that I would parent Eben the way that I wanted to – I enjoyed holding him all of the time, and enjoyed breastfeeding and co-sleeping with him even more – dare I say, I loved it and remember thinking to myself that those were the happiest times of my life.

Another thing that I loved about attachment parenting is it made my life as a mother so much easier. Breastfeeding is super convenient, I had a never ending supply of food for Eben with me at all times, and it is totally eco-friendly too! I never had to worry about what eco-friendly bottles to buy, toting feeding supplies with me, or needing a place to heat up a bottle. Breastfeeding, co-sleeping and “baby wearing” taught me to slow down and enjoy the moment, savor my time with Eben and I love those memories. I never knew that the way that I parented was called “attachment parenting”, I was only parenting Eben the way that felt right and natural to me – I never thought of it as been extreme.

I breastfeed and co-slept with Eben until he a little older than four. Eben is now almost 11 and we have had more than our share of challenges, but the one thing that has never faltered is our bond. Even at 11, he is still my snuggle bunny, he still holds my hand when we go somewhere together and he still kisses me hello and good-bye, even at school! He has a kind heart and I like to think that has something to do with the way that I parented him in the beginning.

I think that as a mother, you have to decide what is best for you and your child. It’s your decision. If you want to practice attachment parenting, go for it! If you don’t, that is fine too. I have a friend who is an amazing mother, she didn’t practice attachment parenting and the choices that she made worked for her and her children – they are delightful! I think you can be an amazing mother regardless of the type of parenting that you choose, I just thought this article was interesting and wanted to share my experience.

What do you think? Do you think there is an age limit to attachment parenting? What style of parenting worked for you? I would love to hear your thoughts!

Environmental Summer Camps

Summer break is quickly approaching and I have been considering the ways that Eben will spend his 2.5 month vacation. Since Eben is an only child, I like to send him to week long summer camps here and there throughout the summer – it gives him a chance to try new things and meet new people.

This summer, I signed him up for three different week-long camps, two are adventure-type camps and the other is an environmental studies camp. The first will have a focus on ocean kayaking, snorkeling and surfing,. The second will be spent paddle boarding, wind-surfing, swimming and doing yoga. And the last will be the environmental studies camp where he will enjoy netting small ocean critters and identifying them in the intracoastal, helping to care for injured marine animals, checking on turtle nests on the beach, and watching live wildlife presentations.

He is really excited! As I was signing him up for these camps – I was thinking how much I would love to go to summer camp! Wouldn’t it be fun to have week long adventures sprinkled throughout your summer. Maybe, next summer I will plan a family summer camp adventure! Ha!

Are your kids off to summer camp soon? Do they spend just the days at camp or do they go away for the entire summer? I don’t think I could stand not seeing Eben for the whole summer! I would miss him too much.
